Last year was a very stressful year, for a variety of personal and professional reasons. As a result, by the end of the school year I was doing a lot more yelling that I was comfortable with, both at work and at home.
I was able to regroup and recharge this summer, which comes to an end on Monday (I know, all you with normal jobs have zero sympathy, and I understand). One of the things I did this summer was clean out my garage enough to be able to get to and use my tools. I also cleaned off my basement workbench, where I’ve recently taking up customizing Hot Wheels.
In order to keep myself sane, I have committed to working on something, anything, in either the garage or the basement everyday. It doesn’t have to be any specific amount of time, it could even be five minutes putting tools away. That’s what I did today, as well as reorganized my drawer of 1/2” sockets and drives. The photo is an extra torque wrench I’m going to stick on Craigslist.
I started a few nights ago, because I was starting to get wound up about school starting next week, and I feel better already. I’m sure many of you can identify with the good feeling that building or fixing something gives you. I’m so happy to have my work spaces clean and usable, and I’m looking forward to the things I can do with them.

Cleaning out your brain is so much more important than people realize. Doing something mechanical or manual labor seems to do the trick for me.

Working on things keeps me sane. LEGO helps too :)

Yes, absolutely. Everybody needs a creative outlet, and doing something mechanical is mine as well.

Yes! I have a backlog of Lego sets to build too! I’m saving those for winter, when it’s too damn cold to have any fun in the garage.
